What is 12?
Today the children were asked to discuss and show the number 12. They decided that it is definitely a number. That you can count out items to 12. It can be written as the word twelve. That you can add different numbers to make 12. Also, the number 1 in 12 represents the number 10. Here's some of ways they have chosen to represent the number 12.

Diwali
Friday was very exciting in the Pukeko Nest. We loved coming to school in our bright clothes to celebrate Diwali. We were very lucky to have Kushal's Mum and Dad (Moana and Sandeep) share some Diwali experiences with us. We watched a video clip explaining the story of Diwali, then had fun dressing in traditional Indian clothing. Trying some special food and drawing the rangoli pattern with chalk outside kept us busy all afternoon. We would like to say a big thankyou to Moana and Sandeep, we had such a great time and have learnt so much.

Diwali
On Friday we were very lucky to have Kushal and his Mum, Moana share their celebrations of Diwali also known as the Festival of Lights with us.
Many Indians celebrate Diwali with gifts, lights, fireworks and special meals. We had lots of fun painting a clay pot each. We used bright acrylic colours and glitter. The pot is called diva and is used as a receptacle for a candle or fire.
We made fireworks uing cellophane and tin foil.
We practiced colouring in rangoli patterns. A rangoli is a colourful design made on the floor near the entrance to a house to welcome guests. At Diwali, Hindus draw bright Rangoli patterns to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter their homes.

Welcome to Niall
Today we were happy to have Niall join us. It is lovely having you, Niall and we extend a warm welcome to you and your family.
Turtle
We have learnt to do the 'Turtle' when are are mad, sad or upset.
- We cross our arms infront of our chests.
- We pretend to crawl into our shell
Then we:
- Tell ourselves to stop!
- Take one long deep breath.
- Say the problem and how you feel.
- Say to yourself 'I can be calm'.
We made turtles on Friday to remind us of what we can do to help ourselves.

Anger
This week we discussed what it feels like, and looks like when we are angry. We explored what makes us angry and ways that we can help ourselves to feel better again. We learnt that everyone gets angry at times and that this is okay. We talked about our behaviours when we are angry and what is acceptable and what is not.
You can read our stories here.

Celery
Today we investigated how plants drink. We knew that water was transparent so we dyed the water red and black. Then we were able to see the movement of water up the plant. This was a capillary action. You can see a link to this experiment here.
We wrote about our investigations .Click on CELERY to view.
