Kia ora, haere mai and welcome to the Pukeko NEST blog. This blog has been created to enable you to connect with your child's learning as they begin their important journey at school. There is a literacy and maths page for you to better understand our programme, and continue the learning at home. Welcome to Niall
Today we were happy to have Niall join us. It is lovely having you, Niall and we extend a warm welcome to you and your family.
Turtle
We have learnt to do the 'Turtle' when are are mad, sad or upset.
- We cross our arms infront of our chests.
- We pretend to crawl into our shell
Then we:
- Tell ourselves to stop!
- Take one long deep breath.
- Say the problem and how you feel.
- Say to yourself 'I can be calm'.
We made turtles on Friday to remind us of what we can do to help ourselves.

Anger
This week we discussed what it feels like, and looks like when we are angry. We explored what makes us angry and ways that we can help ourselves to feel better again. We learnt that everyone gets angry at times and that this is okay. We talked about our behaviours when we are angry and what is acceptable and what is not.
You can read our stories here.

Music
Pukeko Nest loved their music lessons and concentrated so hard. They enjoyed using maracas to shake to a rhythm and pop up puppets to listen to the pitch.

Celery
Today we investigated how plants drink. We knew that water was transparent so we dyed the water red and black. Then we were able to see the movement of water up the plant. This was a capillary action. You can see a link to this experiment here.
We wrote about our investigations .Click on CELERY to view.

Pukeko Nest Scientists!
This week we learnt about what a seed needs to grow. We watched the Tiny Seed a book by Eric Carle. We found that all plants need 5 things to grow. They are water, sun, soil, air and space.
On Friday we became scientists and investigated the tiny plant that is inside a seed. This is called an embryo.
We shared out a bag of frozen broad beans (thawed) and had fun removing the gray seed coat to reveal a bright green bean inside. We split the bean and were excited to discover the embryo inside.
Many of us then enjoyed eating our bean and came back to eat more! click on Embryo to see our investigation.

My Little Garden
Today we had lots of fun planting our seeds. We needed to add water to the soil and put the plants where they can get some sunlight. We will use spray bottles to water them over the next few weeks. If anyone has some spare spray bottles could we please use them.
We are eagerly waiting for them to sprout into seedlings.
